Sunder (beautiful in Hindi) India

Today we went to Vidya (means Knowledge in Hindi).  This will be one of my two placements a few days a week.  I will be working in 2 slums known as Munikaa and Okhla.  These two sums have schools that were started by the NGO Vidya.  Their schools start primary 1-5 and then grade 6-12.  Most children by the 8-12 grades drop out because they don't have the money for a personal tutor.  The reason many need a tutor is due to 50 plus kids in a class which equals very little individual time.  I will be working in the two schools giving medical exams.  I will be checking eyes, ears, throat, height, weight, hygiene, and much more I am sure!  I will be able to teach the children as well.  Their schools do not have toilet paper.. very rare does ANY place have toilet paper.. so they are taught to rinse with water.  I am hoping to teach them proper hand washing technique, foot-care (because many don't have shoes), proper food intake, and I am sure much much more!

Local woman preparing food for locals (her way of income)

Fresh fruit stands.. Many people sell fruit as their main source of income.. today I purchased 2 cucumbers  and 3 tomatoes for 30 rupees (62 cents in US).

"The Ricshaw" very inexpensive transportation in India.. I will definitely be experiencing a ride in one of these!

I love their carrots... they're RED and DELICIOUS

Another main form of transportation in India

Kelly and I in Flat 167 where we eat, have meetings, and get picked up for placement in the morning.. Today was our first day wearing our attire.

Bob (a volunteer), Vicky (administration dept), Jaggi (program director), Myself, Kelly

Suresh one of our two cooks! He makes fantastic food!  He looked away he was too shy.. all he did was laugh! Precious

Today when speaking to Mala Goyal the NGO head for Vidya I learned some fascinating things about India.  I hope to get a picture soon but until then I will just explain.
Neem Tree-- is a very common tree found all over Delhi.  The tree is considered a disinfectant/antiseptic tree.  The locals will cut branches and shred the bottom and use it to brush their teeth.  When they are getting over bug bites or anything dry and itchy they will rub the branch up and down the arm to relieve the sting and itch.  They also make soap and toothpaste out of the tree.  It is a wonderful resource for all to use that costs nothing!

Tomorrow morning I will be leaving at 730 am for my first day at Mother Teresa's home for the Dying and Destitute.  I will update everyone on how the day goes.  Then Thursday I will be working my first day in Ohkla or Munikaa with the children.

A few side notes.. Delhi is beautiful in its own unique way... So many people are hesitant about coming to India because of the poverty, garbage, dirt, "smell", etc.. I definitely stereotyped the country before my arrival.  I've only been here for 5 days and have not traveled that much but I must say I was wrong.  The country is amazing.. the streets yes are lined with "shanty towns", dirt, and poverty.. but they are also covered with low income/poverty stricken people "WORKING" to make some sort of living.  I look around the US and we see "bums", homeless, low income not working etc.. here they try!  They try to make ends meet.  Every morning I wake up to a man pulling a cart of vegetables on his bicycle.  You can see in his eyes he is exhausted but he continues to try and sell anything he can to make himself and family some money.  Women have stands where they cook or sew to earn a living.. Men have barber shops on the street corners.. they shave men in a chair on the street holding a mirror.  They make the best of each day!

Today we had a scavenger hunt/get familiar with your surroundings.  I had to buy a loaf of bread (30 slices cost 20 rupees 40 cents in US).. I chose a man who was in rags on the street to buy the bread from.  I asked him in Hindi Ye Kitne Ka Hai (how much is this) to see his face when I spoke Hindi was worth much more than 20 rupees.  I am getting to learn the culture, understand their way of life, and appreciate the smaller things in life.

Until next time Suno Dhanyavad (thank you for listening)

India's "Triumph Arch" Gate

Exploring..

The long awaited for picture of my authentic Indian Attire! (this is for you Rebekah, yes I know I am the best sister-in-law ever!) This is one of the 2 outfits I've purchased so far.  Thursday when I attend Dosti, Yaari, and Qawwali's public performance and hour recital by the Nizami Brothers I will most likely wear this outfit in the Mosque but I will use my dupattaa (scarf in Hindi) to cover my head!

Today Sunday the 15th we went to a few sites in Delhi.. We started our tourist tour (I took way too many pictures.. as if my blonde hair, and white skin doesn't scream tourist enough, the camera glued to my hand definitely did!) We first went to the Lotus Temple ( Baha'i House of Worship).  The design is inspired by the lotus, the exquisitely beautiful flower and symbol of purity that is inseparably associated with worship and religion in India.

The second stop was the Humayun Tomb.  It was inherited by Humayun in the Mughal Dynasty when his father died in 1530.  His tomb was believed to have been designed by his widow.  It was the precursor to the building of the Taj Mahal!  There are over 100 tombs in the walls and Humayun's tomb lies by itself in the center of the room in the top dome.  (pictures soon to follow)  Just before entering the gates this man (looking for money) sat with us and told us the story of the history behind this 1530 architecture.  He was utterly disgusted when we offered him 10 rupees.. he actually rejected our money... oh well.. He made for an amazing picture!

This women was sitting on the top outer balcony of the Humayun Tomb.  She was so peaceful and in such a relaxed state of mind.. I wonder what she was thinking... I could see in her hands and soles of her feet the exhaustion of her life.. but her eyes told a different story.  Her eyes beamed with peace!  She was simply amazing!

After there we went past the India Gate it was almost identical to the Arch of Triumph that I saw first hand in Paris, France.  It was beautiful.  It was a large arch that was represented as the main gate of India. (pictures to follow)

Finally we drove to parliament.  It was out of control soo big holy cow... there was the military headquarters on one side, the prime minister on the other, and straight ahead was the presidents house.  Umm house was an understatement... the ESTATE which it is, is ridiculous... maybe they should take some of the money they put towards the electricity in that house and use it to help some of the poverty that covers the streets... I hate how insanely out of control the amounts of money they spend on decor... yuck it makes me sick... when ultimately they could be helping reduce poverty and promote health in a country that desperately needs it. (ok I am off my rant )

More to come!

Nemaste!

i LOVE it here!!!!  I was picked up today and taken to my flat.. it's a decent size.. three bedrooms, four bathrooms. I am sharing a room with a women named Rebecca she lives in San Francisco super nice.  Two other volunteers are here right now as well and two more tomorrow.  Kelly is from Minnesota and Grace is from Virginia.  Grace is 18 years old and the most fearless individual ever!  She just graduated high school and she decided to take a gap yr.. She spent the last three months in Tanzania with CCS (so cool to be able to reminisce with her from my trip) now she is in Delhi for 3 months with CCS and then she is headed to Thailand for 2 months with CCS... holy cow right?!?!?  Needless to say I am super jealous :)

I went to homebase today and met the staff.. Jaggi and Bella are super sweet and extremely welcoming.. lunch was fantastically delicious and super colorful, and of course SPICY!  After that I unpacked at the flat and took a shower little less interesting than yesterdays encounter.. haha

Lalit one of the in country staff members took us shopping for our Authentic Indian dress!  Boy oh Boy I was a little girl in a candy store! haha I felt so badly for him... waiting on 3 women shopping!!  Needless to say we took forever, tried on numerous outfits, and then of course went back to our original choices! I am officially a "Indian" dressed women!  I chose two shirts, one pair of crazy pants, a scarf, and a pair of shoes that I know many of you will be jealous of!!  I got back, put on all my clothes, and took a picture!

I purchased one less fancy and one more fancy-- the fancy one was obviously a little more expensive  but I have to look good when I go visit Mother Teresa's tomb! What a statement right... I could go in rags and she would accept me!  A few of the girls want to go to Calcutta as well so I feel a little more at ease to travel.

We plan on traveling to the Taj Mahal next weekend and then Calcutta the following weekend-- I will definitely keep everyone updated on those adventures!

Speaking of adventures driving alone is an insane adventure here... today Rebecca and Kelly were trying to cross the street and it was crazy busy with motorcyclists, cars, trucks, bikes, and these three wheeled crazy contraptions which I absolutely plan on going in-- well to make a long story short for Fred ;) they ran a car swerved and hit a motorcyclist and the guy went flying! YIKES!

I am still settling in but things are going very well, I feel at ease, and very comfortable.. tomorrow we will learn about our placements, have a hindi class, and bum about and then Monday it's off to work- that's when the real experience will begin... so to be continued

thanks for following everyone-- yes I am being safe (to an extent) :)

New Delhi...WOW

Hey everyone I am safe and in New Delhi!  Both my flights went very smoothly and landed earlier than planned!  I met a wonderful couple on the airplane who live in NY with their 2 children they actually took me in instead of me going to the hotel..  Apparently I am terrible at booking hotels online..  Hotel Raj was in an area known for cocaine, lots of drugs, violence, hippies, and about an hr to hr half from airport! Good job Kathleen... should've listened to my mom oops :)

The couple took me in for the night in Hauz Kaus it's actually 10 minutes from where I'll be staying.. They gave me a ncie room, bath( 2 buckets 1 hot 1 cold) mix in cup and pour on yourself.. makes for a quick cold shower! I have eaten so much CURRY already haha there is not getting away from it!  Last night they took me to a bazzare (huge shopping area)  we got some silk and a few random things.  Afterwards I got to experience my first bit of street food!! Fresh GOAT KABABS!  they were delicious!  They eat here very similiar to the Arabic culture... use your hands and eat everything with thing bread similair to pita so i am currently in heaven! haha

I was supposed to go with them to friends for dinner at 9pm but I fell asleep in the car on the way home so they dropped me off at the house at 730 and I went to bed!  I am glad I didn because they were out until 12-1230 and I only got 2 hrs of sleep on the plane!

It is morning now we are having breakfast soon (curry of some sort I am sure) and then I am headed to homebase around 12pm.

As all of you know I am a Huge believer in Fate, Faith, and things happening for a reason... So let me fill you in on what's going on.... As I am standing in line in the Hethrow airport I meet Yacub Mathew and Mary.. They ask me what I will be doing in Delhi and I tell them I'll be working in a Mother Teresa home well God put me there for a reason... Yacub spent 10 yrs working with Mother Teresa...  Back in the ealry 70's his mother was extremely sick and dying of non-hodgkins lymphoma Mother Teresa came to visit her and prayed with her and the family... She was told she had 6 months to live (she passed 4 yrs ago) Mother Teresa became so close to her she'd visit every other week and sit and pray with his mom and taught Yacub to work with the poor in the homes... he has so many stories of Mother and he wears her cross around his neck that she gave him when he was younger.

Last night I spent the night in his Mothers room.. On the walls are beautiful prayers and pictures... I could feel the serenity and peace in the room.. I have been wanting to come to India for so long because of Mother Teresa and yesterday it hit me that this was Her way anf God's way of talking to me... I have been in awe for the past 24 hrs listening to stories and feeling the love of Mother Teresa pour out of his heart!  I am TRULY BLESSED!

They have invited me Thursday to a Mousqu where I will take part in a musical prayer ceremony amongts 100 people I am looking forward to it ! It I am sure will be an amazing experience that I will never forget!

I am headed to the homebase shortly to meet the staff and get settled in... I have no doubts that this is where I am supposed to be!  I will keep you all updated on my travels talk to you all soon!

12 hours until I am India Bound!

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who made this possible!  I am leaving for Newark tomorrow at 4am.  My flight leaves at 8am and after just one stop in London to change planes I will arrive in New Delhi at 11:50am Friday the 13th! I will definitely do my best to blog as much as I can.. The first few days may be minimal until I adjust and get the swing of things! I am so excited and I can not wait to embark on this part of my life!  Hope all is well and healthy with everyone while I am gone! You will all be missed!

Today is my best day... Because GOD is with me

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.
Isaiah 41:10

Whatever my fears may be today or whoever my enemies may be, I have Friend who sticks closer to me than a brother.  Today is my best day because I do not walk through it alone, abandoned, or forsaken.  God is with me and He can handle any situation I face, any foe I encounter, any problem I meet, or any conflict I confront.  God's presence with me is the reason He gives me not to fear.  God is not only with me today, but His mighty hand is holding on to me with every step I take!

I am placing myself and this trip in God's hands.  I know many of you (Mom) are scared for me but I want you to know I have Faith I will be ok!  I need to do this for me and I appreciate all of your support in my life decisions!  I love you all!  See you in 32 days :)

Placement Information~

Today I received my placement for my upcoming trip to New Delhi, India!

Mother Teresa Home for Dying & Destitute

I will be working Monday-Wednesday in one of the Order Of Missionaries Charity Homes that Mother Teresa founded in 1950.  The order, was established to provide shelter and food for people who were sick and dying in the slums of Calcutta.  Mother Teresa Dying and Destitute is a place where sick, old, and poor, are provided with medical care, food, and shelter.  My daily activities are going to consist of feeding patients, getting them dressed for the day, cleaning their wounds, and changing their bandages, assisting them with physical therapy, making their beds, and encouraging interaction between staff and other members of the charity home.
Vidya  -medical check-ups of children

My second placement will be on Thursday and Fridays where I will perform medical check-ups for children.  I will educate and empower underprivileged socially handicapped children.  My activities will include, assessments, eye exams, hearing tests, vital signs, wound care, education, and prevention of illness.

I leave in 6 days and I am so excited.. I will keep you all updated on the area, the work, and the experiences I encounter.  All I ask is that everyone continues to Pray for the lives myself and the other volunteers will touch in India, myself and the volunteers, and everyone who we will encounter on this trip!  As we all know there is a lot of poverty in this world.. all it takes is a little "doing" to help make things a little better!

FAITH sees the INVISIBLE, believes the INCREDIBLE, and receives the IMPOSSIBLE.
